Early Life of Albert Ekka
Albert Ekka was born on December 27, 1942, in Zari village, located in Jharkhand’s Gumla district. He belonged to the Oraon tribe, an Adivasi community known for its rich culture and deep connection to nature. Growing up amidst the forests, Albert developed a love for hunting—a skill that would later serve him well in the military. His parents, Julius Ekka and Mariam Ekka, instilled in him the values of discipline and determination.
With an aspiration to serve the nation, Albert Ekka joined the Bihar Regiment on December 27, 1962, marking the beginning of a remarkable military career.
Albert Ekka’s Military Career
After proving his mettle in the Bihar Regiment, Albert Ekka was transferred to the 14th Battalion of the Brigade of the Guards in January 1968. His service included counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India, where he honed his tactical skills.
In preparation for the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Ekka was promoted to the rank of Lance Naik. His courage and leadership during this period cemented his reputation as a fearless soldier dedicated to his comrades and his country.
Heroism at the Battle of Gangasagar
The Battle of Gangasagar, a critical operation during the Bangladesh Liberation War, became the stage for Albert Ekka’s ultimate act of valor. On the night of December 3, 1971, his unit was tasked with capturing the well-fortified enemy position at Gangasagar, located near Akhaura in present-day Bangladesh.
Despite facing heavy shelling and intense enemy fire, Lance Naik Albert Ekka fearlessly charged enemy bunkers. He silenced a light machine gun (LMG) post that was inflicting heavy casualties on his company. Though seriously wounded, Ekka continued to fight with unmatched courage, clearing bunkers and neutralizing an enemy medium machine gun (MMG) that was obstructing his unit’s advance.
In his final act of bravery, Ekka scaled a fortified building and eliminated the remaining enemy soldiers, ensuring the success of his company’s mission. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries, but his heroic actions turned the tide of the battle.
